Bread Pakoda / Besan ka Toast
Updated: Nov 25, 2021

A, Indian breakfast recipe that is really an all-day snack option – much like Vada Pav and Poha. Bread Pakoda is also a famous street food across Northern India.
This one is a basic recipe of Besan ka Toast / Bread Pakoda, easy to modify as per your taste:
make a mint (pudina) chutney sandwich, dip it in the besan mix and fry.
stuff the potato mix used for aloo bonda / batata vada between two slices of bread, dip it in the besan mix and fry.
place a slice of paneer or a couple of teaspoons of paneer bhurji between two slices of bread, dip it in the besan mix and fry.
a three slice / layer bread pakoda could be made using layers of a potato mix & mint chutney or tomato ketchup & mint chutney… any combination that you like!
cheese! always a good option

Makes: 8 plain bread pakodas
Time taken: 20 minutes
Ingredients to make Bread Pakoda / Besan ka Toast
(for 8 plain bread pakodas)
4 slices of white bread / whole wheat bread – cut diagonally (leave the edges on)
Cooking oil for deep frying
For the besan mix
2 cups besan / gramflour
2 medium sized onions – finely chopped
2 – 3 green chillies – finely chopped
A few sprigs of coriander – finely chopped
½ tsp turmeric
½ tsp red chilli powder
Salt to taste
Water as required – for a pancake batter consistency
Method of making Bread Pakoda / Besan ka Toast
Start heating cooking oil in a kadhai / frying pan to a medium hot temperature.
If the cooking oil is too hot, the bread pakoda will turn brown quickly and will not cook through, leaving the bread soggy and the besan raw in the middle.
Combine all the ingredients listed under besan mix. Dip the diagonally cut slices of bread in the besan mix and fry on medium heat, till golden brown.
Serve besan ka toast / bread pakoda hot with mint (pudina) chutney or a condiment of your choice and masala / adrak (ginger) chai.
My personal favourite is besan ka toast with aam ka achaar (mango pickle) & adrak chai !
